Switch Types
Common Types of Switch Installation
A standard single-pole switch controls a light or outlet from one location. It is the most common switch in homes and businesses.
Dimmer switches let you adjust brightness. Three-way switches let you control the same light from two places, such as the top and bottom of a staircase. Four-way switches add a third location. Here is the difference between single-pole and three-way switches.
Smart switches can be controlled by an app, a voice assistant or a schedule. Some also offer dimming, motion sensing or energy monitoring.
Other options include occupancy sensor switches, lighted switches that are easy to find in the dark and timer switches for bathroom fans or outdoor lights.
